Mangystau — where the earth tells its story

On the western edge of Kazakhstan, where the steppe meets the Caspian Sea, lies Mangystau — a region that feels less like a place on a map and more like another planet. Millions of years ago this land lay beneath an ancient sea, and its retreat has left behind chalk cliffs, striped canyons, salt plains and fields of strange, perfectly round stones.

Travellers come for the drama of Bozzhyra, with its white-and-ochre spires, and the silence of Tuzbair’s blinding salt flats. They wander the Valley of Balls, marvel at Mount Sherkala, and climb the rust-coloured ridges of Mount Bokty. Hidden in the rock are underground mosques such as Beket-Ata, still visited by pilgrims today.

Mangystau is also a cultural crossroads. Silk Road caravans once passed here, and the necropolises of the nomads still stand across the plateau. Evenings belong to hospitality: tea, warm bread, and a sky so full of stars it seems to hang within reach.
